Nothing to worry about. Like Magic says, it's just the oil squeezing out of the hydraulic tappets. They will be prone to this if the oil level drops below half way or if the engine hasnt been run for a while. Take her for a spin for a few miles and all will become quiet again!

think a 12 mile run is out of the question after the amount of grub i was 'made' to eat at my sisters yesterday!

surly driving the engine with it tapping is not good for the cam all that tapping on the cam will ruin it long term. does this happen to all boxer engines both my air cooled and my 2.1 do it and it really pisses me off.

my cj with adjustable tappets allways sounded sweet even if parked up for a month or so.

Not much can be done about "leaky tappets" IMHO it wont harm the cam or lifter as there is a spring inside the hyd lifter.. its the lifter internals that are making the noise...

1 thing that really makes them leak is short runs.. if you start and move your vehicle a short distance then its more likely to leak a lifter down.. if you use too thin an oil then that wont help either.. if you have a really tired engine.. 20w50 might help it..

The "new" lifters that are available seem to have a hit and miss quality.. and replacing them means you have to either drop the head to refit new pushrod tubes, or splask out on a not very cheap expanding pushrod tube...

If it clears after a few miles.. I wouldnt worry about it.. but if it persists, then you might want to check the rockers and preload.. (Lifter preload is only 1/4-1/2 turn from just touching.. NOT the 2 turns as in the Haynes etc)

Toomanytoys....

Is the pre load set on a warm engine with pumped up valves?

or a cold engine after a good run?

Doesn't matter if its hot or cold, could go into explaining why but its quite complicated... So I won't bother!
Better to adjust with them 'pumped up' as this is what the setting of half a turn if meant for.
If your engine does tap at all and you suspect the noise to be coming from the tappets, dont thrash the engine until the noise has gone. It won't really do any harm but doesnt do it any good if you know what I mean?!!
Just take it easy for about 12-15 miles and all willl be well when the oil pressure has topped up the hydraulic cylinders.

As he said.....

You cant set the preload on a freshly rebiult engine... set them to zero lash... (ie no preload)
