Auto Box Compatability

Post by Dubstar »

The auto box on my Aircooled Westy went a few weeks ago, so I've got another on it's way - thanks Emma and Steve - but it's off a watercooled and has some cooling pipes for the oil on it I'm told. Do I just take them off and blank the holes or do I need to fit an oil cooler? Or even the radiator off a water leaker!

I used to have a auto 2ltr cu and the box went on it.Inquires about using a later autobox with water cooling said it can be used on the Aircooled .Its okay without the coolent and connections pipe just blank off.As it was i got a second hand autobox for the Aircooled but if a later one had come up i would have used it.

Thanks for that camper. Told you Emma, piece of cake. He says going down in flames! I suppose worst case scenario would be just to connect the 2 pipes together and cut out the oil cooler
Anyone else though, just in case?

On the later autobox the coolent /connection on it helps to control the A.T.F fluid tempreture. For towing and lots of hill work its an aid on a 2.1 later engine .The earlier autobox as fitted on the Aircooled just had to cope without the extra cooling. It must have been okay as there where many devon Aircooled 2ltr cu fitted with autoboxes.

As long as it's a 2.1 auto Westy poptop, then I'll swap

So would it be advisable to fit an oil cooler anyway, or would it cool the oil too much?

hi , not sure but i think the boxes are different!
visually seem to be ,not sure on internals tho, final drive is same as 1.9 watercooled
i think gear linkage/filler pipe is different from memory!
check first.
