Hi i was wondering how hard this conversion is and if anyone knows of any sort of home-made guide to carrying it out.
The engine currently in my bus is a 1.9 watercooled DG.
Any help appreciated

It's not difficult, but depends on what parts and facilities you have to work with.
Do you have the following from a diesel T25?
Gearbox bellhousing
mounting bars
sump
diesel input shaft, or grinder to cut the WBX shaft down
waterhousings for head and water pump
full set of water pipes
clutch
flywheel
bellhousing tinware
Do you have the following facilities?
Bunch of spanners and sockets
torque wrench
Engine hoist
axle stands
welder and exhaust tubing (or ability to put up with 20bhp loss of power caused by running the JX turbo with the guts removed and then plated over)
Big hammer
the confidence to beat one of your chassis rails with the big hammer
A multimeter and some basic wiring skillz, innit
If you've got all that then you're probably fit to go on a GTI conversion. We're here to help you through it, so go on your own and ask questions as you proceed. As far as I'm aware the only big gotchas are knowing you need to fit a diesel spiggot bearing in the end of the crank and that you don't tighten the diesel sump bolts until you've attached the gearbox to the engine, or you can pull one end of the sump off
The rest of it's just hitting things and spinning spanners, the sort of thing anyone could do.

I'm just wrapping up a mk3 gti conversion after 8 months mainly due to being a slack b***tard as my old boss used to call me.
I used all info i could find on here and asked a few stupid questions along the way, thanks to everyone who replied. Am in Leeds and have a few tools/bit of knowledge (a dangerous thing!!!) should you need any help.
07767896730.
Worst bit for me was mk3 wiring loom but its simpler on mk 2 i believe.
My van now under going road tests so you may hear a loud van on the streets of leeds, still sorting out exhaust. currently have about one inch ground clearance which is constantly being ripped off by all the bloody speed humps round here. Just cant stump up cash for bespoke one just yet.
Just a shame the vans rust coloured.....

Girls - don't ever expect to be more important than his van! Instead, love it just as much!
vw babe...
Not even thought about starting it yet!!! Ive had so much on recently i just haven't gotten round to it. I am currently completely restoring a mk2 2 8v GTI so thats been given priority as my bus runs like a dream. When ive finished that i'm going to make a start tidying my bus up a bit and possibly an engine conversion.
The original question was more out of interest to see just what it would require and will probably go ahead with it in the not-so-distant future, depending on how restoring my golf takes!!
Il keep it posted when i do make a start!
Thanks for asking though!
