pre engaged starters are allready relayed as standard. ( its called the starter solonoid ).
the power that supplies the starter to turn the engine over is already direct from the battery if the t bar contacts in the solonoid are clean and effective, i cant see how wiring the relay in this way would have any benifit on how fast the starter turns the engine over.
saying that the mod` would aid the solonoid to actuate but only if you had problems with the standard wireing or switch.

Its a common bodge for all rear engined vw's, it does mask a problem but only until it gets worse and won't start at all.

total waste of time!!
save your money!
makes much more sense to either buy a new battery and / or, move the battery to the back, in the engine bay, where it should be .
its easy to do, and makes the cable run to the starter motor half what it was........nad you get all the storage space under your driver seat.

Also... if trying to start on LPG, then turn on ignition (but not start) with thottle wide open leave until safety relay shuts lpg valves (3 seconds) then turn off and try and start with a little bit of throttle.....
What this does is "charge" the inlet system with a slug of gas...
This worked every time for my caravelle from cold and even in winter..

The relay does help with is old wireing[and the long wire front to back of the van] and poor contacts on the ignition/starter switch, and maybe problems with the starter solinoid, the pole peice gets peramently magnetised?.
I dont think, so I'm not[do I exist?]

Result at last!!!!!
Eventually took the starter off and took it to an auto electrician. It needed the rear bush replacing and for good measure i replaced the gearbox one. The starter spins freely now and turns the motor over at a good speed......and along i was thinking it was on the battery/charging end. The best thing is, he only wanted a fiver. Seems like a nice, honest bloke
Place near Preston it is, if anyones interested. Bamber Bridge Auto Electrical.
The van is at last reliable!!!!!!!
Cheers to all for replying
