petrol in oil

Post by colouredFunk »

hey,

there seems to be petrol getting in the oil (2.1i lpg conversion).... - when I check the oil level it is right over the max marker, and when I drained it out, it is very runny and smells of petrol...

I've done an oil change twice and it keeps on happening.

I had it running earlier today and did a little test drive in it and appears to run OK...not smoking from the exhaust. But the engine started to become quite noisy and you could hear the tappets louder and louder....I guess that's the oil thinning out....I've called it a night now. Tomorrow I'm planning to do a compression test.....replace the existing oil. Then unplug the petrol pump and run it on LPG, see if that makes any difference. (Maybe it's running on both!!?)

Any advice would be appreciated...

Hopefully it's not the piston rings... I guess it wouldn't run very well if it was?? Maybe it's over choking?

Carburated with mechanical fuel pump on engine? Then fuel pump is knackered and leaking into engine. Their is no other way for petrol to get into oil if engine is running like it should.

Are you running on lpg or petrol? Not that it really matters cus fuel pump is working all the time anyway.

is the manual override tap for petrol shut?

disconnect the pump and run it on gas..smell the exhaust
reconnect the pump and smell the exhaust.

if engine is 2.1 then it is fuel injected. only ever come across this problem when engine has been overfueling and flooding the engine. Also could happen if you have a leaky injector which drips when vehicle is parked and fuel drains past rings. This needs looking at as will cause bore wash and knack engine eventually.

if the control circuit is naffed, or a probelm with the injector loom, then it is possibel its running on both.......

maybe crap wiring is an issue.

I agree with Lloyd.
Manual Petrol pump is naffed.
Had the same problem with one of my vans a few years ago.

it hasnt got a manual petrol pump, its a injection, so its electric, and under the sill........ so its either a injector problem, or wiring.......

they start on petrol, then switch over to lpg at 3000 rpm..... or less, but if his isnt switching the pump or injectors off, it could be over fueling..

They don't run on both fuels for very long - couple of miles then they die - hiccups, backfiring, stalling and generally dog rough. Won't restart.

I know, coz it happened to me when the switch in the engine was letting a little petrol in as well as gas!!

cheers for all the replies :D

I disconnected the fuel pump, replaced the oil and it appears to have stayed at the same level...

For some tests -

I connected the fuel pump back up, disconnected the injectors and took them out. With the ignition turned on they didn't drip any petrol at all..

I did this again but with them connected up....the ignition on (and LPG selected) the injectors did 2 squirts then stopped. When the engine was cracked the injectors squirted quite a few big puffs then they stopped when the engine was turning over...

So, not really sure if that is a good or a bad thing.....any ideas....?

I've just noticed when the van is running, the oil level shoots up.....(with the petrol pump turned off) it even spatters out the top of where the oil dip stick goes...if I leave it out while running

.. but it drops back down when I turn it off.....

that normal?

Not neccesarily there friend ..... 2.1 DJ's can (and do) run the 1.9 DG carb/LPG setup instead of the injection gubbins. The drive for the fuel pump is still there, just blanked over.
