Bought another Syncro.
After selling my RHD Syncro in January I have kind of missed it. I have a slammed Caravelle to keep my happy, but once you have had a Syncro it's hard to forget about them.
Anyway, I have bought this white one that has been dragged back from a hiding place in Germany. It's a 1989 1.6 turbo diesel. It drove the 75 odd miles back home ok without too much fuss.
There is a list of jobs to do as normal & will get the main bits sorted quick so it can be MOT'd & registered.

I need to do front CV gaitors (think I might need rears too) It needs a clutch master cylinder as it sprung a leak & the speedo cable is noisy. The feul guage reads stupidly low so need to sort that quick!

Nice bus Pete Nice.
When you say noisy do you mean tap,tap,tap, & a jumpy speedo? Have you just replaced speedo cable, did that sort it? Also what could cause the fuel guage to read too low?

I have just bought the bus & have done nothing to it yet. I drove it home from Kent to Surrey & its just sat here now.
The speedo is noisy over about 40mph it sounds like 1 strand has broken away & is hitting the outer casing. It is very annoying more than anything. The speedo is still smooth though.
The fuel guage I am not sure where the problem lies. It is either in the dash pod, maybe the voltage stabiliser is kippered or even the guage itself. It could be the sender in the tank. I will look in the book & see how hard it is to remove it.
A mate of mine is buying a scrap T3 next week so I will rob all the UK bits off it & swap them over. I will try the MPH speedo pod & see if that fixes the guage. It might shut the speedo up, but I think it is the cable.

The fuel senders are different too.
It goes in the side of the tank rather than in the top.
Theres a circular plate on the side of the tank (visible through the wheel arch) that has a load of bolts round the edge.
Might be worth getting it tested first to make sure it is the problem, would eb a pain if you were to drop something in the tank while replacing it as you'd need to remove your gearbox then also, .....not to mention that tank straps

I will have a go at testing it with a volt meter. It should be ok to remove, I will just have to be careful not to drop anything in.
Sods law about the speedo head, I guess I can still use the fuel guage, A quick plug in & test should show if it works or not.
I guess I can live with KPH, it's not a big deal really.

I take my hat off to you working on these every day, everything is so heavy & covered in crud! I did the CV boots earlier, it put up a bit of a fight but I have them done now.
I wiggled the connector on the fuel sender earlier & now it doesn't work at all! So I guess I better buy one one those next week.
Will give you a call on Monday or Tuesday...

Ok, there are a few bits on their way thanks to CJ.
I jet washed the van off & ran the polishing mop over it for good measure. It got most of the scratches out I accumulated on Sunday's test drive too.
It's not great by any means, but it is a bit better. There is more to come soon...

I have fixed the fuel guage now. It was a faulty sender. The plug was totally rusted on so I have had to make a new fly lead for the connector.
It was straight forward to change. The only problem was I obviously didn't know how much diesel was in it. I jacked the left hand side up as high as I could but when I pulled the sender a load of diesel spilled out!
The studs on the mounting ring were all ok, so I have a spare one if anyone needs it. (I bought one just in case)

I fitted the new speedo cable today & that seems ok now. I fitted a fog light & got it MOT'd so at least that's a start. I scored some bull bars too which make it look a bit better...
