I know I have seen the answer to this before, but cannot find it....

2.1 LPG carb


running and cutting out. all lights go out on dash, radio dies. Total loss of electrics. Everything. But restarts no problem (hubby dips clutch and bumps it) and it all fine. Dioesn't seem to be a pattern - did it once or twice some weeks back....then a few times on the way home.

Is is right that we should be looking at igntion switch and the alternator?

or sommat else?

What in the igntion switch are we looking at?

If you loose all the electrics it's most likely a loose main battery lead or earth connection, if the alternator was faulty you should just get the ignition warning light coming on randomly. The igntion switch could be to blame if the rest of the wiring checks out ok.
Why does the not quite finished job before last always conspire with the not quite started job after next to make what you should be doing now harder?

yeah, check the battery leads first, then the fuse box main feeed, then the ignition switch

thanks folks...we have justs changed the battery....but thought they were pretty tight.... :oops:

will check all the other stuff too!

This all reminds me of a nasty prank a brummy friend played on me one night in his commer van. We're driving along through the dark lanes of Essex and without me noticing he killed the lights and in a blind panic yelled at me: "Quick, quick, give me a shilling for the meter!!!". And yes, for a brief second, my hand went for my pocket..... :lol:

Try it on someone some time - works every time. (grin)

I have a wee cutting out problem too, same description as yours
Im no closer to sorting the issue yet

checked the battery wiring & alternator which are fine

Hi Irish Keet,

dunno about petrol, as John doesn't run it on petrol :D Its far too expensive!!!

But, if I had to put money on it, I would say yes, as it is a loss of electrics, as if it had been switched off. Fuel type I cannot see making any difference.

Interestingly, the van did it several times on the way home last night, as if a loose connection had somehow got looser. Then, on the way to work this morning it cut out at a jucntion. Restarted no problems. But John was able to give all the igntion wires a good push.....and it didn't do it again all the way to work, which is an improvement on yesterday - will wait and see what happens tonight on the way home.

Unlike your complaint, we don't have to be turning a corner!

Hi Ian,

yes I agree with that.....but was a red herring!!!

Giving all the wires a good push behind the ignition switch and at the fuse box seems to have sorted it!! (fingers crossed - didn't do it on the way home yesterday or into work today!)

We had a similar trouble with a L/R .... swapped the cracked battery and it wouldn't start, totally dead ... just a crackling noise .... which turned out to be the 1" thick battery lead welding itself to the bodywork where it had just rubbed though the insulation :shock:

Hi Em... I'm back!!!

Would have been your ignition connections behind the key by the sound of things. If it's battery connections they can come loose or even completly disconnected and the engine will still run because the alternator is supplying the power to the electrical system and doesnt need the battery. Not a good idea on newer cars as it can cause electrical spikes and damage sensative elecrical equipment but on our ol' lumps its ok!
