after a few weeks of putting up with rough running of the van i decided to give the carbs a good strip and clean, problem is i adjusted the basic throttle valve gap screw (the one that originally had a tamper proof cap). followed haynes to set the gap but now the carbs are backfiring and poping and blowing the rubber elbows off the inlet manifold making setting everything up a nightmare.
any pointers as to why the carbs are back firing would be much appreciated as im out of ideas!

they are either out of balance or you got an air leak. check for leaks by squirting some wd40 around the base gasket. if the engine note changes you have an air leak!!! have an extiinguisher nearby hust in case tho, its always a little risk spraying stuff on to engines.
to check balance have a peep in the haynes manual
the other thing is are you sure it was the basic throtle setting you adjusted??
