Aus 4x4 day. steep slopes soft sand & black smoke!!

Post by vwjon »

Another great day out in the bush n dunes! (West Oz, pipindinny)the sand is soooo soft and its not easy to drive thru! tyres down to 12PSI, i even managed to peel a front tyre off the rim!! bugger!!
at least i wasn't as bad off as the first pic, looks like it rolled and burned, there were a couple more like it!
the engine is still belching out black smoke, its down on power, i've tried everything, i'm now convinced its the valve stems & seals allowing petrol to dilute the oil and then burning the thin oil!

well enjoy the pics. its been 37*C for the past few days, a cool cloudy 25 today - real nice!!

Unlikely scenaio I'd say...

That roo bar can't help bogging down in soft sand, I'd say...

but then i say a lot of things :D

karl, petrols about au$1.30 p/l or 65p/l uk.

harry, theres plenty of clearance on the roo-bar, i modded it and the spare wheel tray so my approach angle is a little better! i only dipped it in the sand once! bottomed out once, and got bogged once. all in all a great day.

westy, the calm people (conservation and land management) have stopped all access to the beach so fishing and swimming is out! bugger!!

even so still a great day out and loads of fun!

Jon,

It does look like fine, dry sand. What tyre pressures were the Patrols and Land Cruisers running and did anyone else get bogged as well?

Looks good...
I want to come...
Wife doesnt want to move there!!!

Black smoke is running too rich.. nowt to do with stem seals... that would give blue smoke, but mainly on overrun..

I would check
all the Fi connections and check the pressure.. then maybe have a look at the injector spray patterns... maybe they are past there best and leaking!!!
What code engine is it? Dj or MV I suspect...

hi guys, others did get bogged, but not for long! they were running between 20 - 10psi, i was running 12psi and managed to peel a tyre off, others had problems in the same area.

toomany- ive tried everything, look in the post "belching black smoke" in the tech forum. i'm gonna swap the motor for a spare i have, then play about til i find and solve the fault!!

£1.02 p/l?????? oh yes i see how throwing cash at the government will stop global warming!!! they will keep running their jags n stuff, global warming will take over, kill off the general public, and then no more polution! its as clear as muddy smog!
i gotta laff, Oz is the only country i know where the throw away diesel motors and chuck in an 8litre V8! not enough grunt in a diesel!!

I'm a little biased here but...
us Aussies are ingnoramuses when it comes to diesel engines.
Generally speaking of course.

I wonder if folk will throw out the V8 diesels in the Land Cruiser 200 series?

Talk her in to it Si - you've come part of the way (IOM to France) just a few more steps south!
