Veg Oil Second Fuel tank?

Post by thefatsurfer »

Can we take it as read that we have done the "oooh you cant put veg oil through a standard diesel pump - its not built for that " "oh yes you can " thing  I am not sure yet myself, and my finances are far from able to do it at the mo, but I do follow the arguements with interest, but don't want to duplicate a thread. So, if i did buy a proper kit with heat exchangers and heated fuel filter from biotuning but wanted to put a second tank for extended range (70ltr S. African in between the struts underneath type thingy) Which would be the best tank for the veg oil and which for the diesel? Would it be better for the thicker veg oil to be in the main tank as it won't make the pump work as hard (as its not meant for it  ) Would dragging the thinner diesel from the relatively low underslung tank also cause problems? Anyone know where to get a cheaper tank than the £400 Bulli tank ? Many thanks

working on this solution.I fabricated a second tank aprox 45ltrs to fit between inner chassis rail&outer seal.To get over viscosity on low temp start before switching over from dino fuel a tank heater will be fitted .Once the vegi oil is warmed up in the tank the heater can be disabled. The vegi oil will be kept hot for the pump with heat exchangers. Its not operational yet so i carnt tell you the results .The main vehicle fuel tank in my opinion should be used for the dino fuel.A second tank made or purchased and used for the vegi oil.Problems regarding pump failure i carnt disagree with some on here. But i will be fitting viton seals which are bio fuel resistant and good heat exchangers to keep the vegi oil fluid.

I would be inclined to say that the tank you will be filling up the most should be the one that is easiest to fill up. If the veg tank has a filling spout that is easy to get to as the original then keep the original tank for dino diesel and the second tank for veg oil.

Thats my thoughts on it, i still think it would be nice to put a syncro panel in for the second tank even thought you cant fit a syncro tank.

Thanks for the tips ! Camper keep me posted - it sounds an interesting project to say the least. Forgot to mention my bus is a 16' Syncro if that helps - "syncro panel"?

lee,
yes please for the details of the alloy tank maker. Looks like it will be an alloy underslung in the same config as the water tanks on some westies. Probably put an inline pump to give the diesel a bit of umph to get to the injector pump.

I guy called Neil that used to post on here (and still ahs my socket set!!!) had a pretty good design for a second (and third) tank that went under the floor and was filled via the 'standard' 2WD filler hole.

I'm running 2 tank veg but put veg in my main tank and diesel for start and flush in a 22 litre orange plastic tank inside in the back. Just like this :

Mine came as part of my smartveg conversion kit but you can get them here :
