help im looking at a syncro today

can anyone tell me about a 1.6 diesel
how can i tell if its got a turbo
what do i need to look for

Im looking at it in tonbridge wells kent
about 2-4 pm today.
anyone in the area that can meet me
to help me spent loads of dosh one some crap

Look for smoke when accelerating hard (use driverside mirror). Black/grey maybe OK, blue lots, not...

Check the engine bay for completeness and neatness and the cab also, if it looks like bits are missing, choke control just left of steering wheel, frinstance, nice tidy lecy junction box at rear back of engine bay etc and engine and rear of van not covered in oil, that might be a starter for 5 points at least.

Easy start from dead cold is good (has he pre-warmed it up before you arrive?)

Must be TD, not 1.6 N/A
If its over 100,000 maybe you might want to see bills for what's been done to engine if anything.

Geachange prob won't be as good as yours, but it should select all gears of course and not jump out (lift off in 1st 2nd and 3rd to see if it stays in OK)

If it's marginal, or incomplete, I'd make big monetary allowances for that...

Russel will tell you more, I'd take his phone number with you in case questons crop up..

Owner should confirm TD or not, wll it go over 65 for instance

Expect it to be noisier and less refined than the one with yellow wheels..

If not the drive could be the deicding factor as to whether you will even consider purchasing one! (Power, what power?)

Huge enough, it's a stronger engine overall, the basis for everything 1.9 TDi that came later... quite a success story.

Clive, DO keep up, the 1.6NA engine was never fitted to the Syncro. Hence it's highly unlikely that you'll find one with an NA installed in.

The 1.9 unit has a far better spread of torque than the 1.6, which is what makes it far more driveable. Power is only 68bhp (1.6) vs 75bhp (1.9), but with the better power delivery and stronger headgasket of the 1.9 it's a far more robust and tractable engine - far better suited to a T25.

In other words, yes a 1.9 is vastly better than a 1.6.

But you need a 1.6 to start with to get a 1.9 (usually)...

just got back from looking at it
overall it looks ok in the photos
but quite a lot of rust and filler but all panels/doors/dropsides were straight
lots of blue smoke when started [started first time from cold]
then it smoked for about 2 miles before black smoke papered
the kid selling it had to ask his dad if it had a turbo,,,nope don't think so he said

by the way its a single cab RHD white with 104.000 on the clock
the dif locks don't work but it don't scrub on turning

hes was asking £2350. for it
I offered 2000 over the phone
but after looking at it wouldnt give him £1,500 its worth that in spares i think.

£2350 way over the top from that description Terry.

Engine-wise you should really allow the cost of a 1.9 transplant within the year.

Where is the filler then if all the panels are straight.

is there water ingress to the locker? Is the locker or load-bed rusty?

having known and forgotten they were all TD's as Thomas said, you shouldn't be finding an NA Syncro around unless it's been mullered

Doesn't quite sound the one for you Terry, unless the rest of it is in superb nick...
as you say £1500, maybe a shade more if you really want it..

Further opinions no doubt on the way
