83 1.6d panel van 1Y, gear box and fule pump questions

Post by elastic mike »

recently fitted a 1Y engine to my 1.6d 4 speed van and I'm thinking of upgrading to a 5 speed gear box, and posibly a 1.8 16v gti engine, I have chance of an engine allready but not sure wich gearbox to go for. theres a turbo diesel gear box available with all the linkage and other parts, just unsure weather this would suit, I'm waiting to get the gear box code to check the ratios. any advise?

Also, On my 1y diesel fuel pump there are two, what look like preasure units that have single wires coming off. one on the top of the diesel pump and one on the auto choke mechanisem. they're both exactly the same, Im guessing thee one on the injector is to do with fuel shut off, but I dont know how they should be wired. any ideas?

check out your ratio's on this site

Five speed are not necessarily better than four speeds. The extra gear is more underdrive than overdrive.

On my old diesel i had only one of these wires - for the 1Y i simply joined the two together and fixed them to the original wire that comes out the loom. It works.

I can't really be any more help than that because i didnt really know what i was doing - i just guessed, and it worked.

There's a few guys on brickyard who have done this - so they might be able to help - i would be interested to find out.

Cheers
