electrical fault...fixed!

Post by kevtherev »

Yesterday I arrived home (in the snow) switched off

returned a few minutes later and started up switched on the wiper ...it did one sweep and that was it...

no wipers
no sidelights
no interior lights
no dash lights
no tail or numberplate light

use the flasher and they all work again as long as you hold it

checked all the fuses on the board ...ok

late fuse board fitted

I'm studying the wiring diagram ...but would appreciate some ideas

Sounds like an earth fault somewhere, but not sure where would cause those symptoms!

Are you pre-1985 ceramic fuses or later blade type?

Think Steve might be onto something about the bad relay. Might be back-feeding through relay.

Have fitted a No 19 intermittent relay...otherwise it's all standard

shall check ignition connections tomorrow

I see where you're going Steve as the power is restored to the circuits on flash+high beam

Have been told that using a no. 99 relay is variable setting delay instead of preset delay in no. 19 relay:

No. 19 relay is pre set intermittent relay.

No. 99 relay is variable relay: (out of old golf or whatever)
To set variable relay interval, flick switch down to turn on. It will now wipe once.
Turn switch off, then back on at length of time you want to set the interval.
The variable delay is now set.
Haven't changed mine yet, but plan to.

Good luck!

thanks for this thread, and the search facility on t'forum

exactly the same happened to my van today - unfortunately i've lent it to a mate, who's stuck on the m4 somewhere with no wipers or lights! at least i can point him in the right direction to try and fix it temporarily :)

shame i was "advised" to replace the alternator last time this happened - and thus am £350 lighter now :(
