my new 16 syncro
well after a long debate i`ve finally bought my first syncro and brought it home yesterday.i was told it would sit comfortably on the motorway at 110kph a it did exactly that.
110kph on the speedo? after about an hour my brother who was following me phoned me to tell me the sat nav was recording a speed of 80mph+ and that his speedo was reading 90.........oops.
tyre size is 205/16 not chunkies.
is this normall as my 2wd T3 speedo tends to read a little fast as its supposed to.
delica now for sale. lee.

Just to be clear; your speedo said 110 km/h and the satnav says 130 km/h, so your speedo is way behind?
Are you sure you've got a "proper" 16" Syncro?
because the difference between 185/14 (standard 14" tyres) and 205/16 (optinal 16" tyres) is about 12.5 %
110 x 12.5% = 125 km/h
Or maybe you've got the wrong ratio drive for your speedo installed

Hi and welcome
Nope they normally read high... (wish mine was doing what its says it is! at 110kmh!!)
Need to see what diff codes you have, letter and numbers can be found on the underside of front diff and on the flatish area on the gearbox..
Other thing is... they dont normally have enough power to sit at those speeds.. and it will feel that fast.... so more info please?

no its edmunds blue syncro that he bought from syncrospares origonally i think, used to be a bus but now has a westy interior that needs finishing off.
dont plan on doing to much to it yet as my 2wd westy needs finishing off for next summer but once thats done i`ll make a propper start on it.
that should give me some time to get to know it better to.

16" syncros are slower generally than 14" cars, the gearing is lower to allow for the larger tyres, the gearboxes apart from the driveshaft flanges are not 16"specific,there the same gearbox as 14" just different numbers, ive a 16" caravelle here thatll do 70mph red lining it,so your blue kombi sounds about right,cj.
bought some real off roaders!!!!!!!

syncrospares and chiz have you checked your speedo against gps would be interested to know if syncro speedos generally read under,as nearly every other car i`ve seen tend to read over( ie speedo says 70 actual speed 60 )
with cameras everywhere these days it dont pay to have speedos under reading i`m going to mark mine up over the weekend so at least i`ll know what speed i`ll be doing.

Last week on a land-rover forum I was sent what I thought was quite an interesting PDF about Jaeger speedo clocks as found in many old british vehicles, >>> http://www.dur.ac.uk/p.d.kuhlmann/speedo.pdf
Having a look at my spare VDO speedo its vertully the same, what a surprise!
The trip counters are gear driven from the cable and so are fixed ratio, they'll eather work or they won't. Therefore its worth checking the error in that. I don't know what error they were set to at the factory, my van doesn't have its original size tyres and I'm not sure if the drive is original ratio eather as the errors are not what I expect. (As I've just changed my tyres for a slightly different wrong size it'll have changed again ofcourse!). If anyone still has a syncro thats known to be completely standard even down to the tyre size I'd quite like to know how out the trip counter is!

This is my old speedo, it overread so an indicated 55 was actully 40mph. Having read the above link I noticed it has markings round the rim, hidden when fitted; I wonder if those are the calabration markings that the PDF says you get at places like -5MPH? As I've done in the picture you can carefully lift the neadle over the stopper and this clock when known to be wrong went to rest about 1mm under the stop. I've since removed the neadle and fitted it as shown, lined up with what could be a calabration mark. My current speedo works alright (on the old tyres) and I fitted it to the van before I lerned about this so I haven't checked that one, or rechecked this one in operation as that would envolve dismanling something (again) that currently works alright - theres plently more that isn't so I'll save my energy for that! Back when I swapped them, in comparison the sereously overeading clock did feal much weaker spring'd and now in its present form as shown above it feals much better.
**Disclaimer, I decided have a fiddle with the speedo pictured as in my mind it was a faulty spare, broken anyway, which wouldn't anoy me too much if it became more broken in a perminant fassion (though it apears I didn't). Being fairly gentle (my opinion of gentle could be very different to someone elses!) with it it seems to withstand having the neadle removed but there is probubly a risk of it falling to bits and the spring fireing across the room (you can see the spring just under the face if you look around the neadle) - that risk I leave to you!
