Have been meaning to ask about this meself. I'm confused now, easily done I know! Haynes manual (petrol engine) says that no. 1 cylinder is front right?!

Haynes says 1 is front right - which is what Andy said.
On aircooleds the tinware is actually stamped/labelled to tell us - and it even shows the firing order next to the fan..

So what I thought was the back of the engine, is actually the front of it?! What decides / influences which bit of an engine is the front and which bit is the back?

Everything is relative - to the vehicle that is! Not the engine as you survey it from thro the tailgate....

If you look really, really carefully at this pic:

you should be able to see a faint "2" stamped into the tinware just below the throttle bar but to the left of the throttle springs.

Facing the front of the van on the right is where the number 1 cylinder is, so haynes is right. The engine's in the back of the van don't forget! So you're looking at what is essentially the back end of the engine. The front of it is where the flywheel is, and the gearbox is attached to.

Airhead, try telling the above to GSF.

I asked for a nearside front manifold (exhaust) pipe for an early 1.DG engine & the one they handed to me was the short one with the collar attachment which fits nearest the n/s tail light. So GSF work back to front.
