what's the 'standard' VW oil?
Just run out of my Elf 15-40w. When I was at gasure got talking to Steve about oil - he uses the 'standard' german VW-recommended 15-40w non-synthetic oil.
Anyone know which one it is?

VW's own brand of oil is Quantum.

Standard?
HEy guys - have been recommended away from morris 30 - good on OLD Aircooled and back in the day but not as good.
Reason for asking about 'standard' is I posted a 'best oil' thread ages ago - 40 odd different responses and a few arguments of the 'that blew my engine up' variety.
Castrol maybe - or I'll just phone Steve!

I wouldn't use a monograde oil.
Okay on old sacks of sh!te, but they are meant to run 15w/40, or if it's a bit tired you could chance 20W/50.

Monograde oil ie. SAE 30 is recommended for air cooled engines.
Multigrade oil ie. SAE 15/40 is recommended for water cooled engines.

Thats because of the new TPS and TPS not being allowed to sell to GSF.
Our local dealer did a roaring trade with the local GSF for oil, now it's a TPS they ain't allowed to sell it to them.
Fuchs is point of fill at the VW factory, so it is good.

I use Fuchs SAE 15/40 non-synthetic oil for my 1981 Aircooled CU. It is the grade in the manual for the temp range in the UK.
I was told it gets too cold in Scotland for SAE 30.
The nice ppl at Johnston Oils (Big independent distributor in Scotland) checked with VW, and Manufactures to make sure this is correct for the CU engine.

If you asked the question before and got 40 different responces do you really think its gonna change when you ask it in a slightly different way??
VW "Quantum 15w40" is the oiul, but wont be available much longer as it has limited vehicle range now.. (For VW)
Any branded 15w40 should be good.. if a tired engine a 20w50 will help..
I have done over 200k miles on 15w40/20w50 and laterly 15w50...... Mann oil filters... both changed every 4-8k miles..... never had an oil related problem

Yes - cos someone will mention brandnames and I'll go "Fuchs' that's thename I was trying to remember" For fuchs sake how did i forget

Hacksaw and SImon - cheers guys! Job done - thanks will track down Fuchs or Quantum and hope that going vi a restatement of '15/40 NOT monograde' will save another engine along the way! (I know any reasonable one would be OK but if I'm gonna go buy a big bottle may as well get the good stuff)
