auto transmission fluid

Haynes book says use Dexron, couldn't find any local so went to volkswagen dealer who sold me some fluid that just says suitable for volkswagen and audi automatic gears.Is this ok for a 1983 water cooled transporter,at 9 quid a litre it wants to be.

Bentleys says Dexron or Dexron 2 - they can be mixed so dont worry about getting 'right' one .2.5l @ £9/l ? hope you kept the receipt !
