I was working on the van over the weekend when a derv 4X4 roared past up the hill. After a few moments I got a whiff, what did it smell like? It smelt EXACTLY like a BBQ!

that would be bio diesel i have been running my tdi vw sharon on it for about 4 months now with no problems except for the smell its costing me 76 pence a litre

Horna, have you had any issues with running bio-diesel? I've seen rubber seals & hoses after this stuffs been used for a while & it turns them to goo. Doesn't it also clean out the diesel deposits in your tank & fuel lines & clog your filter?

Your right it does all that, very nasty stuff and is only a short term money saver.

I look after an old fella's fiesta diesel. it ran great on this chip shop stuff and then he got problems. Basically the residue congealed and he had all sorts of problems. managed to get him running again by changing filter (2k miles old) and getting loads of proper fuel in to system. Al is fine now. maybe it's an idea to alternate between bio and regular fuel?????

trick is to use the stuff from the supermarket. very clean no bits

so no clogged filter issues. i have been running my 93 golf on the cooking stuff for a year now using 60-40 mix diesel-oil. runs quieter and gets same mpg. tesco sell 3 gallons drums for 8 quid

smells great but remember it ain't legal

All you people who've had problems, I'd be very interested to know whether or not the vehicle had been prepared for running on WVO or SVO.

eg. dual-tank system with heated tank/filter and/or fuel heat exchanger, all fuel lines replaced & fuel pump rebuilt with viton seals.

Just considering SVO and want to be properly informed.

I second syncroandy,
A modern turbo diesel will run fine on bio diesel.
However if you run on veg oil you need a pre heater and seperate tank as you need to run on diesel for a while till warmed up then turn over to veg oil and before you get to your destination turn over to diesel again to clean out the injectors or it will congeal.
A non turbo should have no real problems unless you have certain fuel pumps that dont like the veg oil. Again though you could realy do with a heating unit for the veg oil.
Will give same fuel return as normal diesel.
You should change the filter after a 6 weeks i think it is as the veg oil will clear all the carbon from the engine but once the carbon is removed with the filter the filter should bve fine then.
I want to go veg when i get a camper.
Oh as stated before it is legal to run on veg and bio diesel even making your own.

Just in the middle of a SVO conversion on my van. Will do a post once its done. regarding the Bio fuel, if you dont wash it properly after the transterification then some solvent will remain and this is what goos up the filter and melts the fuel pipes.

As i have athirsty 1.9dg, i have recently bought a Peugeot 205 1800 non turbo run around vehicle.

How would i go about running this on veg/chip oil?? - or is it not that simple?
