loud clicking fuel pump

Post by edoh »

my new electric fuel pump - sounds v loud (like my old one did) when you turn the ignition on -
is this normal for dg engine 1900 cc petrol water cooled vans?
does this type of van have a fuel pressure regulator? If so where might it be located and could this be a source of the fuel pump noise?
any ideas /suggestions welcome -

Has your DG got a carb, if it has it should also have a mechanical fuel pump. The american vehicles all had fuel injection with electronic fuel pumps. If someone has upgraded to an electronic fuel pump from a mechanical setup then the pressure regulator will be after market, and not a VW item. They only have to run at around 4psi (I think). All the 2.1 were injection models with electonic fuel pumps mounted alongside the chassis rails under the van.

Let us know what your setup is and a bit more about your van.

Simon.

I think this post could have gone on the end of your other running post, and might have got more views if was in the technical section.

yep - a carb is there -
mechanical fuel pump - sits unused - electric fuel pump put in by last owner - fuel line runs into pump - out of pump into fuel filter - and dissappears again! :) - engine dg - water cooled - petrol - 1915 cc -
plus one fuel filter runs under van - just past the fuel tank -
always a fuel regulator with an electric fuel pump?
situated? might be cause of very loud fuel pump clicking?
any ideas welcome -
:)
ps - van runs fine -

I guess then that the clicking will be the pump switching off, cant say if it's too loud. If it works then it's prob alright. If it is getting louder then it is prob on it's way out. The mechanical ones are generally fine, and I think are around the £40 mark. They wont click either. I am a fan of things being standard ( to a point ), but an electric pump will do the job just as well.
Hope this helps.

all really useful comment -
getting the ears and eyes attuned to sounds of van -
running fine at moment which is the main thing - will keep an ear open for escalating loudness of clicking - new one doable if necessarry -

thanks for your interest -
