2.0 air cooled T25

Post by meggles »

:? right, I've heard all sorts of different opinions but I value the opinions on here more than anywhere else. My question is : Is the 2.0 air cooled CU engine any good? Is it worth working on to get it right, or would I be better fitting something else such as a diesel or a water cooled petrol engine. Economy is not great (23 on a run) and it rattles on start up for a while but is smooth after about 10 mins or a couple of miles. Slight oil leak from somewhere but does not need topping up between services. Can attain 70-75mph on the flat but runs easily at 60 ish (fast enough for me).Sometimes misfires 'til rattling stops, but not always. All and every opinion welcome because I honestly don't know whether or not to replace engine whilst it's off the road being refitted! I am aware of work involved in fitting cooling system and rad etc if I go for water cooled but will no doubt ask for advice if I go down this road. Thanks

Funny you should ask!! I have just this week taken my a/c t25 off the road. My Engine blow up and it needs a compleat rebuild so i have desided to do the scooby conversion, just came back from picking up a radiator and some other bits.

It is a dylema i was toying with for a while, basicaly it comes down to what you want out of your van. How often do you use it every day or just holidays. Does it do everything you want it to do as it is? Also how much did you pay for it in the first place is it a classic westy or is a pannel van you are compleatly overhalling to be your ultimate camper/van?

My case, I bought it for £800 2 half years ago and have done about 30,000 miles in it and only spent about £500 on mechanical stuff. Not telling how much on toys for it! Its taken me to Austria and back, all over the UK including some of the scottish islands, so i feel i can justify spending the cash to make into 'my' ultimate vehical!!

What are your thoughs so far??

:D Well, mine cost less than yours but at the moment I would not trust it to get me to the end of the street and back unless I had back up. (which I have so I went on a 150 mile round trip and no probs this time). It's just that I have broken down so many times. Well, that's actually not true! I did 50 miles at about 15-20 miles per hour recently. Turned out to be a blocked jet in carb. Best thing is it got me home! I expect to do about 1500 to 2000 miles a year in it so prob not worth a gas conversion or engine swap but it would increase resale value wouldn't it! I have to have something ultra reliable because of health concerns so maybe a T25 was not a good choice, having said that, would a run of the mill vehicle have got me home. Probably not 'cos it only has one carb ,usually! By the way, mine is a tintop with (or rather it had) a basic home conversion.

Like any 25 year old vehicle you paid not a lot for.. its gonna be fuggered about with by prev owners, incompetant mechs and age related stuff IS gonna fail.....

The 2L isnt a bad engine... it needs looking after... Like anything...

If its basically sound, get it working properly...

Just remember going to watercooled isnt going to be plain sailing...
