Isolator switch

Post by chiz »

I am just beginning to run the wiring so that I can install an isolator switch for added security. The job is pretty straight forward but I was wondering if it matters if it is the live or the earth that is isolated. It is just that I have just noticed that it would be very simple for me if it was the earth to the battery that I put on an isolator switch on. When I started this job I thought automatically that it would be the live wire. Any thoughts or tips.

If i understand you, you're saying that you're planning to add an isolater switch to the earth strap on your battery. If that is your plan then i'm afraid that it's a very bad idea. When you're cranking the engine the earth strap is carrying just as much current as the live wire. Unless your switch is capable of carrying hundreds of amps (in which case it'll be massive and easy for potential van robbers to spot) then it'll burn out the first time you start the engine.

There are plenty of other circuits you can isolate to stop the van from starting. I don't want to spell any out for securities sake, but you shouldn't have any trouble finding a few around the dash area.

Hi Chiz

We are planning having a tech day soon on Leccy stuff. They are held just up the road in Gowkhall. We will do doing imobilisers, tracking other bits and bobs.

If you are out and about this Sunday there is a chip run from Inverkeithing Park&Ride to Scotland's fish & chip shop of the year in Anstruther. pop along and get some hint's.
