Coolant leaking from water jacket gasket.

Post by gwolf65 »

The gasket between the right hand head and the water jacket looks like it has split and popped out a little.
Just wondering if anyone who has had a bad leak from this gasket has follwed advice in the wiki and instead of pulling the head off to replace this gasket has used wynn's radiator stop leak to any effect.
Any thoughts or experience with this would be appreciated.
I was lucky with the left hand side head as i replaced this gasket without a problem before i knew that this wynn's stuff could be used for such a job.
Not sure if i want to risk broken head studs etc if i can get away without having to remove the head.
Engine is 1.9 DG waterboxer fitted in a 1986 rustbucket.

Sorry no such thing as a quick fix, treatments have a nasty habit of blocking the cooling system and causing problems somewhere else.
It's nothing a great deal of time and money can't fix

Tricky,
Thanks for the reply,i think along the same lines as you but they seem quite positive in the wiki that this seems to work without blocking everything up.Thought it might be worth a shot.

Where is it in the wiki, not doubting you but I remember a chat about this a while ago, it might be that radweld was the big no no? and it was decided frost was ok. Hopefully the person that used it all that time ago might post here.

wynnes might be ok for a short term fix but always best to do a proper job to be safe in the knowledge that it's not going to leak any more.

How bad is it leaking?

I wouldnt use anything in it.. but thats my opinion.. I have used all sorts of stuff over the years (in other vehicles) and I havent found anything that actually works....

If the other head studs didnt break, then you might be lucky with that too.. if it is a much later engine (do you know if its original?) you could be ok...

I think it's the original engine. As you say i was lucky with the left side so may be alright on the right side too.So it looks like I'm going to go and pull it's head off(when i've got some gaskets).
Thanks for all your help.

Just to throw a spanner in the works...................i was faced with this dilemma earlier in the year and as you didn't fancy a risk of snapping headstuds so i used Wynn's sealer in mine with the attitude that i would probably be looking at a new/re-con engine anyway if the studs snap so had nothing to lose!

Six months and 4,000 miles later there are still no leaks or any overheating problems and i've had another season out of the motor, so for me i took the gamble and it payed off so make of this what you will.

Just to finish off, story had a happy ending.Head came off with a little persuasion to one seized head nut using my trusty aluminium punch and a four pound lump hammer. Now back on and working a treat.
