Removing & Refitting windows - advice please

Post by mud »

I am going to be painting my Syncro when the weather improves and would like to take out all the windows to give it the best possible protection from rust...
problem is I've never done this before :?

Anyone got tips on how to remove and replace the glass or reasons for not doing it?

Glass comes out easily, push from the inside corner and it will start to come out of the seal, then work your way along on edge, it will soon release itself.

Bit harder to replace, but still not beyond the capability of your average bloke, I used some silicone grease (brake rubber grease) to ease it back in.

This was a window with OE VW fitted window seal (Caravelle type preseed window bodyside) I fitted the rubber seal to the window, then with a mate holding it against the outside, I worked from the inside, starting at one corner/side and get the seal lip over the bodyside edge, work your way along peeling the lip over (don`t forget the silicone grease). I used a wide bladed tool (blunt chisel, no sharp edges) and it worked fine. Your mate needs to keep plenty of pressure on the outside. Some people use a length or strong nylon cord set into the seal groove and then pull it to peel the seal lip over the body, but I`ve never done it that way.
Keep it real.

Hi chap,

Did all my windows using the nylon cord routine, worked very well, practice (do first) an easy to get to one. Lubricant? Use car shampoo slightly watered down (its designed for paintwork, so wont affect it). If you want further advice, PM me you phone number, or come to crabfest :D

best of luck, Myk.
