hi
was at the jk techenders 2 weeks ago and we had a talk from a fireman on this subject
aldi are doing a powder one for about £6 this will be fine for a van
the powder puts out a hell of a lot of fire, use in short bursts

£48 is way too much in my opinion

Also, could you safely and securly stow and use a 2kg extinguisher?
1kg is fine - one in cab and one in camper area. Screwfix ones are around £14 (Aldi even cheaper!)

Fire extiguishers

Strictly speaking Dry Powder extinguishers are for electrical fires & fires involving flammable liquids. They are not really intended for use on fires involving 'Normal Combustibles' eg. paper, wood & textiles.

One of our members, young Mr.Hulley, has got his hands on an A.F.F.F. (foam) exinguisher - now that is a good one to have. Only thing is they are not cheap, you would have to go to a fire protection company to get one.

Is this for the engine bay, then?

what happens if you use them on "normal" combustables?

thanks

Emma, dry powder extinguishers are suitable for the engine bay but they don't half make a mess. One of the A.F.F.F. type would be better & it would be easier to clean up the engine bay afterwards.

Dry powder is not guaranteed to cover fires involving paper, wood & textiles properly, so if it can't exclude air (oxygen) the fire won't be extinguished. Water is the best extingushing media for normal combustibles.

At the moment I've got a dry powder extinguisher & a fire blanket in my camper but ideally I would like an A.F.F.F. as well. Just for the record A.F.F.F. stands for: Aqueous Film Forming Foam. It could be used both inside a camper & in the engine bay.

Thanks for that link, Rob. :)

The A.F.F.F. on ebay is a 3 litre with a long hose on it. Good price - cheaper than I would have expected. A 1.5 litre with a fixed nozzle would be more appropriate for a vehicle. :)

Message regarding possible bulk order price & possible collection to save on postal charges sent to seller. Awaiting reply. :)

Another possibility is to contact a fire protection company direct. I will look into this idea tonight. :)

I have emailed 2 fire protection companies, one in Manchester & one in Torquay to see if they will offer us a discount on a bulk purchase of 2l AFFF fire extinguishers.

The advertised prices are £26.43 & £28.14 respectively (incl.VAT) so we will have to wait & see if they will offer a discount. I am also going to contact a couple of fire extinguisher manufacturers direct (Chubb & Kidde).

The 2l AFFFs on ebay are old stock :( & there are only 3 available. I won't be ordering old stock. It would be helpful to know how many members might be interested in purchasing an AFFF extinguisher. If we do get a bulk order organised then we will most likely need to use the ever reliable 80-90 express to deliver them. :)

Working on railway we mainly use AFFF apart from in cabs of the newer trains where powder is king.
Having used AFFF (albeit in training) it is very easy to use in a confined space, i.e a camper, and you can use it on yer seats, engine, and yer toast!
Powder is great on all things electrical but doesn't half make a mess everywhere, seconds to extinguish flame, weeks hoovering the powder out of everywhere, also in a confined space as soon as you let rip with it it's hard to see and breathe through the clouds.
