a boat with white smoke is always (99%) a pump timing issue......

Doesn't say fuelling...

You might be best to get it on a trailer to soemone who can sort it... or at least try.

You say the engine if from an Audi 80. Is that an early TDI engine without the fly by wire Throttle? My neibour had similar problems with his early T4 van and that was the bottom pulley, but it did respond to the throttle.

I am pretty sure that some of the early Golf's,Audi's & T4 vans (92-93) were fitted with non fly by wire fuel pumps.

These still had Intercoolers fitted. Which would make them a TDI.

TDI = Turbo Diesel Intercooler

So what makes you an expert then?

Ex = has been / Spurt = Drip under pressure.

Or the definition I prefer.

An expert is a man who has traveled at least 100 miles to get there.

I am not having a go at u lot giving him advice.
Ime having a go at the "experts" who take money off people and as far as ime concerened con people into beliving they know whot they are doing.
Basicly if someone dosnt insist a gearbox rebuild with the TDI conversion then they dont know whot they are doing.
I so often get people on the phone saying BUT so and so says he can do it for so much and my geardox is fine.
I then get all sorts of calls waisting my workshop time wanting help afterwards when thing go wrong.
There is no CHEAP TDI CONVERSION only a cheap TDI CON.

TDi is direct injection

TD is indirect injection

either can have an intercooler...

The TDi's are electronically controlled

The TD's are mechanically controled

"There is no CHEAP TDI CONVERSION only a cheap TDI CON. " :lol:

I reckon the T25 is now at the same stage the Beetle was in the late 80's.....dozens of garages waiting to take ya money for a 'cal look resto job' 90% of them were rough lash ups.... :lol: Now its time for the T25 to go through the same 'in vogue' times.......

I must admit, even with a simple 90bhp TDI or MTDI or good AAZ, you need to dump the diesel box and get a 2.1 petrol box...... My MTDI was 'horrible' with the diesel box.......60 mph flat out....EEEK !!!

Theres no problem taking the customers money, but you need to stand by your work, I build engines, and have to stand by them for year...any problems and my customers know they can bring it back , drink my tea, eat my biscuits and get the problem sorted......
So my advise.......take the van back or get nasty!!! :x

White Smoke.......If its water,,, then its steam.....

if its unburnt/poorly atomised diesel, it will stink........

Use your nose........... :lol:

When you say over revving......are we talking just a high idle or screaming......????

it was screaming but i narrowed that down to the afm getting too much air ive restricted the air flow and it runs slower but with loads of white smoke that stinks and the throttle still does nothing. is the ecu telling the injection unit to over fuel?

Sounds like timing is retarded, this could be the mechanical base setting or something the ecu is telling the pump to do becuase of an electrica issue, as Baxter says it needs to be plugged in to check for codes and then set timing if nothing else is right. The timing CAN NOT be set on a tdi without diagnostics.

You need to plug it in to check the timing, well, to do it properly anyway.

You can peg it up but again, it depends on if "Driveway Darren" has been nice enough to mark up your clutch/flywheel with some timing marks for you to do it!

TDI's don't suffer with the bottom pulley coming loose like the AAZ's do, but it is a possibility.

Early ones were TD, the AAZ, there us no such thing as a mechanical injected TDI from the factory.

TDI = Turbo Diesel Intercooler
no it doesn,'t, Turbo Direct Injection.
