Early Tailgate Late Lock

Will a late lock fit in an early tailgate?
I know the locks are different, but my small lock fits onto a lmuch larger hole by way of a plastic grommet thing.
I am wondering if the larger later lock fits in this hole without the grommet?
I had a search one post said it does others said it doesn't.
I have an early (83) van and would like a full new lock set with one key, beacuse each lock is nackered to some extent. All early full lock sets appear to be out of stock? I'd like to even fit central locking but believe I will need later locks anyway?
I've tried to rebuild and replace the springs in what I've got whilst the van was renovated, but the welding is now done and my painter is stood with his gun (paint) waiting for me to stop messing about! I want trial fit new things before he starts.
Someone give me a slap and point me in the right direction please!

no.the late push button is a lot larger than the hole in the early door....

Thank you, thats the end of that that idea then!

Anybody know where I can buy a complete early lock set, must be new or very good used?

simon at http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/.was offering a lock rebuilding service it may be worth giving him a bell.or put a ad in the wanted section.one of the breakers on here might have a set...
