Rubber gaiter between filler cap and fuel tank neck perished?
1989 VW T25 Holdsworth Villa 3

It's got a VW motor, a 116.8 cubic inch plant, Michelin tyres, VW suspension, VW shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say, is it the new RedSquirrel bus or what?

you seem to have covered most of the ground - haynes says -
incorrect ign timing - fuel filter choked - fuel pump faulty - uneven / low cylinder compressions - worn/faulty spark plugs - vacuum leak at inlet manifold - brakes binding - clutch slipping -
rudy god luck! :)

Thanks for your ideas keep them coming
on hills that i could get up in 3rd at 50mph with ease i am now struggling at 40mph with distinct hesitation

have found a leak where the exhaust joins the silencer but would this realy make this kind of difference

have checked for water in fuel none found so a think fill pipe is ok

the only thing i have not changed is the fuel pump

Air filter ? worth a try
Plugs correctly gapped ? Ditto
Coil ? (The early symptoms of breakdown occur under load)
Breather hose and tower clear and clean ? (the hose collapses inwards and gives a restricted feeling as if the engine's choking ... sorry, best I can describe it as :) )

How long have you had the van ? If you've just swapped from a Diablo the performance may seem a tad ... well, missing

Hope this helps, Ian.

Doubtfull engine is at fault.. you have missed something... if its starting anf running at low speed the my guess its still the carb.. jets blocked, gasket leaking, one of the diaphragms leaking..

Did you remove the jets? did you put them back inthe right place?

I said to check that.. It wont help, but I dont think its all of your problem..

can you just keep sucking or deos it hold vacuum?
sounds like it split.. JK and GSF used to do them.. But I have made a beetle one fit IIRC the "3hole" type can be made to fit..
