syncro- different bottom wishbones on front 88/89?

Early ones are pressed metal welded together, later ones are cast.

are they interchangeable or slightly different sizes/fittings? VAG swissland are quoting my doctor's brother in law thousands of pounds for a conversion to late from early since the 88 parts are not available from them.

oops! i never noticed you'd posted almost at the same time si, i was watching a film on the telly.

didn't know about that,i've never had to do any major work on syncros since they all used to run like clockwork here.

i don't have the truck here but the guy has actually two of them, 88 to drive and an 89 for parts. it might even turn out that the 89 still has the same parts as the 88, he's only been going on what VAG told him today and they are(generally speaking) feckin' useless.
i know 3 ex-VW agency garages locally who all told head office to get stuffed 2 years ago.

If he's got a "parts" one, better off looking to see what can be recovered..

cheers lads, getting more sense here than on a swiss bus site. i posted on the syncro bit of that and someone offered me a link to an ebay auction for >84 2wd parts in germany.
afterwards he said he didn't realise i was after syncro parts.............

shouldn't be impossible to find what's needed here, but if anyone wants to have another trip in a beach buggy..............

i'll away and finish my belgian beer.

i'd be grateful for links to any specific information on this, just been googling for an hour and came up with a few interesting syncro things in german but feck all that i really needed..............

ps, the proper german terminolgy for the part is "querlenker"

I had a 1990 single cab syncro it had the pressed steel bottom arms, (rotten) but my 1990 doka 16" syncro has the cast iron ones.

U did still get some late vans with early presed arms.
The main diferences are:late arms have the tie rod as part of the arm and early ones bolt onto the arm.The droplincks are different.The late ones have the ball joint pressed into the arm and the eary ones have a seperate casting that holds the balljoint and then uses the same bolts as the tierod to fasten to the arm.Otherwise in phisical size everything is in the same place.

The very last T3's (90 -92) were made completely in Graz (Austria) while Hannover started on the T4.

The story goes that on some of them there occasionally were logistical problems with parts and they were then "cobbled" together with whatever was left / could be gotten hold of in time. There are quire a few out there that have parts they really shouldn't have.

Rumour also has it that paint work and undersealing on the Austrian made ones isn't quite up to standard.

(mines Austrian too, but so far I haven't found anything untoward)

I would prob agree to some extent...

My 1992 has some "odd" features.. and the original paint in places isnt very good... the loadbed has had a hard life and thats not helped other bits...
Still it has the cast arms, power steering, 2 difflocks, electric mirrors.. etc etc... all factory fitted..

so just the lower arms wouldn't be interchangeble without changing all the other parts as well i presume?
