factory sealent on heads 2.1 DJ
Just curious if the yellow sealent you can see on this head is the sealent they used at the factory? I know the sealent you use now is a black rubber like substance, and a yellow sealent going on the head bolts.

2.1, from the 16". The head is back on now but I was debating weather to redo the other one while I had the motor out if the sealent was the wrong stuff, but if its the origonal sealent I'll leave well alone rather than risk snapping a head bolt. Guess I should have looked at the 1.9
the motor has 55k miles on it, there's no ridge on the bores, and the honing marks are still there so that seems about right to me.
I read somewere that the water pump should be replaced at about that mileage, its not leaking what would you recommend?
anything else that I should do while its on the bench? (new clutch fitted and stainless exhaust to go on)
not been up to test centre yet, due to holidays, busy on house, and spending to much time in the pub!

well if the head stud is gonna break when undoing it might go in a few thou in anycase... but your choice.
Waterpum... can fail anytime... might go for ages.. but 27 quid, its prob worth doing as is a new Tstat.. worth checking all the coolant pipes and flushing the oil cooler (water side)
Oh, only preload the tappets from just touching, 1/4 to 1/2 turn..

ok I'll think about the other head, put a new pump on, flush the cooler, and was going to replace a couple of the steel pipes.
here is a pic of the exhaust (JP exhausts)

the thin yellow coating on head mating surfaces might be some sort of factory anti corrosion coating, as im sure ive seen a picture somewhere of a new unfitted head with a yellowish coating on the sealing face, mine had traces of it on too when i rebuilt it, as you say the vw sealant you get now is black for the water jacket gasket. ther was no yellow stuff on the old rubber seal i took off which makes me think its a coating on the head, not a sealant, could be totally wrong tho!

agreed, had a look at the 1.9 wasserboxer I have laying about and you can see the yellow stuff on there, it must be sprayed on at the factory.
If it is ment to be an anti corrosion coating it doesn't work as when I was cleaning it off my heads with 400 grit wet and dry (as per bently manual) there was signs of slight corrosion under areas were the coating was like new.
There no trace of the black sealent either on the old rubber seal or the head so it must be an upgrade from vw.
