Replacing my engine with a reconidtioned one...
Hello all,
Great site by the way, really helpful.
Anyway, the other night I managed to seize my engine up - damn. It's a mistake I only hope to make once. So I am looking for a reconditioned engine (2.0L Aircooled) to replace my current dead one. I have checked out Just Kampers but they are wanting around £1,439 for one, where as I heard you can get one for around £1,100 - does anyone know a good place to get them?
Also is replacing the engine a do-able job for someone with little mechanic experience? I have a friend who just did this on his land rover and he's going to do it with me, so between us and my Haynes Manual maybe we can get through. If however I am about to shoot myself in the foot and kill a new reconditioned engine then please warn me advance.
Also, will my seized engine be worth anything? Or will the damage be too far gone to expect any money from it?
So I'm off to do my research but anyhting that you good folks could tell me would be very helpful and most appriciated.
I promise to return the favour once I have had the experience.
Cheers all and happy trails,
James

Heads will be worth something if they are sound, and seats are OK with no serious cracks...

Cheapest options not always best.. reputation....
Elite seem to have a good re and seem to do the right thing if anything goes wrong.. but I have no personal experience..
Remember that you may not be able to use all of your heat exchangers etc etc and renew any vac pipes etc.. carbs should be rebuilt also if in well used condition.. make sure dizzy is working correctly and the vac advance unit is working...
Dont be tempted not to refit tinware if its knackered.. make sure you get a good part to replace.. fit a new engine bay seal too (If the old one is crappy), DO NOT be tempted to leave it off...
If you are going to fit a new engine, do it once, do it right...

Changing the engine on an air cooled is suprisingly simple, only difficult part is wiggling the clutch shaft into place. All you need is a flat tarmac/concrete surface, a pair of ramps, and a good trolley jack. A couple of hours work no probs. (to get it out)
All engine re-manufacturers that I know will want your engine in exchange.
What happened to your old unit?? It may be repairable as a cheaper alternative, run out of oil?? Left her in third??
The CU engine is regarded by many as being the ultimate bus engine.
Simon.

Hey up
Sorry the engine has now gone.. But just to back up SyncroSimon, the removal and installation of Aircooled units is really easy, even for those not blessed in the ways of the spanner.. have a couple of mates, scissor and or trolley jacks and some lager...
Hope you get sorted.
