More Smoke than Alex Higgins!

I've just a acquired a Karmann Gipsy 1.6TD, seems to run and drive fine, but under stress (hill, acceleration etc) it pumps out clouds of black smoke. Any ideas of where I should begin to get rid of this problem?

Swap it for a petrol engine ?

When was it last serviced ? Air filter ? Pump set-up issues ?

Thanks Ian, bit sketchy as to the last service (I've just bought it) - I guess a service is my first move.

Black smoke on an oil burner can be a few thing's. Worn injectors is one option but it might just be the timing. If I was you book it into a diesel specialist.
