Hi had the van for over a year now and still not got around to fixing this problem.
If i top the van up to the max it p****s out fuel all over the floor but if I only top it up half way it's fine.
Now i know that the fuel tanks have a problem with gathering water on the top of the tank and rusting a bit but is is more than likely to be the filler neck seal.
Any help would be great. The van is a T25 1985 1900. Cheers.

Late or early van? Being an 85 it may be either. If the filler neck is plastic then it's a late tank
Mine was an early tank and the grommet that seals the filler neck to the tank had perished. When the tank was took out the top of the tank was fine. Sadly at that time the early grommet (70mm) was no longer available and I had to have a new later tank fitted with a later plastic filler neck. (JK bundle tank) But now JK seem to be selling their version of the early grommet as well as the late grommet below
Late seal or Early seal
Or try VW for part 251201139A (late seal). Maybe cheaper (part number 7 at his link to vagcat)
That's IF that is the problem but you won't know until you drop the tank.
PS. Also while your at it I'd change the breather pipes to the expansion tanks etc, as mine were totally foobard also the grommets (Part no N90100401, item no9 on vagcat picture) that attatch breater pipes to top of tank etc).
Also gasket ring that aids screwing the filler neck outer housing (where the fuel cap locks to) may also be rotten when you take it off. So get another from VW 251201197 No.10 on vagcat pic). Like a big metal washer with 3 holes in it
All that hassle and now I don't even use the damn thing

Thanks very much to you all for the great info (cruz you are a star)
it seems like I need to drop the tank just to see what im looking at. That said at least I now know that when getting the job done it would pay to get all these little washers and pipes done at the same time. Cheers again. Sherlock.
