Devon Roof - Hinge Problem.

Post by ipaulog »

I recently noticed that the front of my Devon roof was slightly lifted on the front corner.

I had a quick look (before the van was carted off by the insurers after a recent attempted theft) and the hinge is still perfectly attached to the fibreglass so I presume the damage to be where it is fixed to the van.

Has anyone encountered a similar problem? and if so is it a diy fix?

Paul.

Hinge problem

Yes, similar thing happened on our Devon, with the front nearside corner of the glassfibre base pulling away from the van roof. I only noticed 'cos the rain came in to the cab area (coming in between the fibreglass to roof seal) during a downpour with the roof up. We had saucepans located in strategic spots to catch the rain whilst awaiting repair.

I found that the offending corner's pop-rivets had pulled through the van's metal roof. I drilled out the loose pop-rivets, used the next size up of rivet to refix the GRP base to the roof, and a bead of mastic to seal it all off. Voila! Robert is your father's brother. It's about the only proper 10 minute job the van has needed (all the other 10 minute ones becoming 3 days).

I had the same problem, and sorted it exactly like Devonaid above 8)
Do check the middle hinge as well though, because the roof seal traps water that rots the roof, and i eventually had to reposition all of the hinges.

If you need rivets and a pop riveter (and any help) please let me know!
