Gearstsick kink and Ladder question

Post by mfacer »

I have just bought my first T25 camper, Autoholmes Karisma 1990. I am just wondering about the gear stick its 5 speed and although I am 5' 11" I still need to lean right over for 1st or Reverse. I have noticed that most T25 gearsticks have a kink towards the driver but mine is almost straight, it has a small kink away from the dash. Is there a trick to make gear changes less of a stretch? I have fitted the recommended short shifter but not much difference. Also can anyone tell me where I can get a ladder for the tailgate so I can reach the mini roof rack? Thanks Mark

Sounds like somebody has fitted a left hand drive gearstick--or the existing one broke(as they sometimes do) & it was welded together badly--I think you can still order new gearsticks from a VW main agent--

It is possible to loosen link behind fuel tank and slide rods apart slightly. Only a little bit mind otherwise you'll end up hitting the seats!

a short shifter kit is available for the T25 which reduces the travel needed for gear selection.

I made this for mine from stainless steel.

It's made things a whole lot better. No more leaning forward to reach the lever and no more smashed knuckles on the dash when going for 2nd or 4th

knuckles hitting the dash and changing radio stations when changing gear is not normal.. usually down to worn likage bushes or poor adjustment.

A shifter kit will improve the change (available direct from me or via "select" distributors) but will not make up for worn bushes.. Its amazing how good the change can be when a shifter kit and new bushes are installed..

As said it could be that it has been replaced with an incorrect one or welded...
