Early/Late Sliding door handle seals. What changed?

Part number 251-843-711 (obselete) has been superseeded by 251-843-711A in 85 when vw updated the design. So why does this seal not fit an early handle?

I know late handles are shorter but is the hole in the door skin a different size or something?

Rain is getting into my door through the hole as I have no seal on my 83 camper handle thus bottom of door is rotting (I'm sure that is the reason as the window rubbers are sound)

My handle was very loose (1984 early type) so i fitted a large 'O ring' between the handle and the door, no more sloppiness and as far as i can see no water ingress.

Make sure it's a tight fit on the shaft though! ooer missus!
