Body Shell Variations

Post by garyd »

I have a suspicion that the shape of the cab floor, around the gear stick, varies between vans. In some cases (my 1989 syncro) the slope up to the heater seems to be higher and steeper than I remember it being in others.

Maybe this is age-related or perhaps it is syncro/2wd related. Can anyone confirm this please?

thanks
Garyd

As far as I remember it's actually turbo diesel related ...different routing of the coolant hoses necessitated the higher tunnel ...or something like that.

My very early non-turbo diesel had the low tunnel as well, but I don't know if non-turbos also got the high tunnel at a later stage (the TD was introduced in 85), they may have.

My late TD syncro has a massive lump in the floor. I belive its pritty much empty to alow the extra airflow from the massive rad fan (if not clearance for the fan itself)? Certainly never had such a lump on the old 2.1 auto.

Alot of syncro Caravelle's and DoKa's I've seen (petrol, don't know about diesels) seem to have an extra heater duct going from the blower to the second row of seats between the seat boxes which rases the floor a bit too. Don't think I've ever seen such a thing on a 2WD though I don't see why they shouldn't have them. My Dad certainly reconed syncro's had a higher floor as he borrowed one when they were new, I recon it just had this blower though, our Caravelle didn't have that.

The cooling air tunnel is deeper and wider there, that's what its supposed to be. Rubber matt and the mounting plate for the gearlever ball-joint is different too. Possibly stiffens the floor a bit too.
