How much for a decent respray?

Post by oxford_guy »

Hi - roughly how much should a decent repsray cost? I know this will vary depending on whether would be a full windows/interior out respray and/or back to bare metal etc., but am trying to get a ball park figure. For example, how much would I be looking at for a good respray (original colour) of a vehicle that has no visible rust (so probably wouldn't need windows out etc.), but has many minor scratches and scrapes that need to be tidied up? What things should I be asking the resprayer about and what do I need to know? Thanks

My experience of trying to get one these painted is that normal body shops quote silly money because very few want such a big job. I have had many vans painted at commercial body painters. These offered good price and have done very good jobs. As for prices can range from £800 to £2000 but I find that you generally get what you pay for.

I work in a bodyshop and am having my van resprayed in different colours to original. It is fairly irrelevant if the colour stays the same or is changed. My respray will include roof off, doors off and painted including shuts, all glass out etc. The body is fairly solid with 25 years worth of scratches and dents but will need sliding door repair panels and a scuttle panel replaced.
It will be the best part of 100 hours labour plus any parts and paint. Obviously I get a preferential rate but 80 to 100 hours would be a "good" job.
As has already been said, you generally get what you pay for.

Hmmm... sounds like it might be worth paying an extra £1K or so for a van that doesn't need respraying...

There's a nice red van I'm looking at with virtually no rust, but it needs at least a partial respray really, lots of scratches and small dings... Am trying to decide if its worth getting it, give that it'll need some work...

I guess it is difficult as nearly every van out there will need some cosmetic work to bring it up to scratch. Mine is solid just tired a little rusty in places and a horrible colour !!

Is it ever worth getting a partial respray (i.e. lower body) or if you're going to do it, might you as well get the lot done?

The bottom is more likely to need it than the top. It would save having to remove glass etc. As long as the top half is clean and corrosion free. Mine has some corrosion around the windows, particularly the front screen so a full re-spray makes sense for me

How much for a decent respray?

Post by Bowton Lad »

Several peeps on the 80-90 forum have used the same company to respray their vans. Single colour resprays from £800. I have seen the vans owned by Rich Newton, Kevtherev & Shepster & the respays are to a high standard. I would take my van there if it needed a full respray.

C & D Refinishers, Unit 5, Watery Lane Industrial Estate, Willenhall, West Midlands. Tel: 01902 805353 & ask for Colin.

C&D have done over a dozen vans now for 80-90'ers...
as the Lad says prices start at £900...but you could spend £2000 with them depends on what you want done

C&D can offer a very personal respray with a very accommodating Fella in Colin.
You have to tell them what you want and then the advice will come

I went with a design and a picture that was done on a photo shop programme.
It was copied and sprayed faithfully....but due to my mistakes they were copied too.
However C&D re did the mistakes until I was satisfied for no charge.

Recently Tim the trader asked for his van to be sprayed in Ford ST orange....Colin advised him on the costs to achieve the respray and this proved prohibitive, nice to know that C&D are not just after your money..

you could save money by doing the preping yourself as this is what takes the time, rember trhe finnish will only be as good as the prep work , so when you think you've done, do it again

So how do i know if im being screwed. Ive had quotes for £5,000. £3,500 which i obviously thought was much much better only to hear about sprays for £1,000.

Mine needs new arches all way round and one of those sills which ive got so i know theres a fair bit of welding to do. But hell, how do i know they arent seeing me coming. I love my van but that much ............
