If i had a bit more spare cash i would swap!

The 1Y IMHO is liveable - i can do 65 all day. The MPG aint as good as my 1.7d (late twenties to early thirties - doesnt seem to matter how i drive it) but the torque up hills is vastly better.

Sorry, never driven a 1.6td so can't compare.

Personally, if you aint going down the AAZ route, i would sell your engine and buy a 1.6/1.7 na engine (you should end up with a fair bit of profit - a 1.6td non runner at vanfest was going for £450) then use the parts off that to do your conversion.

Really the 1Y engine only gives 20's to low 30's MPG?

My 1.6d is in the high 40's MPG.

wookeys is getting 40+ , yours set up ok ? if the engine has a few wxtra cc's surely it will have to work less for same performance ! if you have a shuftie you will see the 1Y produces more torque at lower revs than the 1.6 td !! im not hung up on the whole AAZ thing , im happy to cruise at 55/65 tops.

Yep - i was quite disappointed as you can imagine.

I was getting mid to high thirties with my 1.7.

What can i change regarding setup on a diesel ?

I need to read up regarding checking gaps in tappets - but not sure what else i can do....

cam timing , injection pump timing , make sure some fool hasnt meddled with max fuel screw.
i did my own cam timing with a kit i bought off ebay(more than welcome to borrow it if ya want)- basically you make sure engine is at TDC , lock the cam (using a tool in the notch on end nearest flywheel) , loosen cam pulley-its on a taper fit- and then make sure all the three vaiables are spot on (TDC/injection pump/cam) then retighten cam pulley once youve moved it
, pump timing KERRMIT helped me with (ok , he did it!) 15 mins work and need a dial guage .
possible someone has replaced your belt and its a bit to "cock". my cam timing was maybe 8 degrees out and injection timing by 0.1mm - both made a huge impreovement in mpg AND performance AND timing :D

What's wrong with your current SB engine Elvis? thought that was bombing along....

Your welcome to take my 1Y out for a spin if you like, but be warned you will notice the difference (lack of) power compared to yours .. excelleration in yours felt quicker and also comparing to my previous JX it seems slower now.

Sorry to hog this thread guys - but those of you that are running the 1Y, what gear box do you have ?

I still have the one from the 1.7d and was wondering if its worth a change ?

I wish! No time, no special tools and not much motivation at the moment. Im too busy camping in the van to actually maintain it!

If i can get hold of the tools i might give it a go.

Will this do?
