?Drive Flange Oil Seal Leak

Post by cornishjock »

Hi everyone,

1.6 1986 Diesel - just started leaking what I assume is ?gear box oil from CV shaft. Looking on Wiki looks like the drive flange oil seal (thanks to VW Tech for advice on Wiki :) ). Coupla questions - has anyone sourced the seal from someone like GSF or Justkampers rather than a VW dealer ? Also, if I ensure gearbox is topped up, do you think I could risk a 150/200 mile round trip in 1 day without knackering the gearbox (although I suspect it's been leaking for a while - ignorance is bliss eh  )
Thanks for help in advance - wanna make the most of our Indian Summer before the winter and terminal rust sets in !!!
Cheers
CJ

i think these seals are a dealer only part, as long as your g/box oil level is ok, shouldn't think it would lose a deal over a short time, one of mine had been leaking oil into a cv when i first got it,but i changed the cv's and rebuilt the g/box, so dont know if it would have done much damage if left, could have been diluting the cv grease for a good while before i got it! i'd remove and look at the cv soonish tho, and get the seal swapped for a new un when you get chance :)
