Fitting New Springs & Shocks... Any Tips?

Post by VWCamperfan »

Afternoon all!
Just wondered if any of you chaps/chapesses have replaced these suspension parts. Got to replace mine and was wondering what pitfalls i'm going to encounter!
Lots of tea and back-rub stuff at the ready anyway!
Thanks in advance. :D

Usually it's the front's that cause the problems, it's the two hex bolts on the top ball joint that seize up or snap off (or both).

Soak them in 'plus gas' or something similar on a regular basis for a couple of weeks prior to enable you to undo them.

At worse be prepared to replace the top ball joint (there only about a tenner) oh and get yourself a pair of spring compressors!

Yeah, you wern't wrong! I snapped off a hex bolt!
Went for the option of lowering the track control arm dow from the bolt on the inside instead, worked ok luckily! Just got to get that old thread out and put a new one in, oh joy! :?

I did the shocks earlier this year and the biggest problem was one of the top nuts. Ended up hacksawing it through (no room for a grinder) and then having to order a new nut from my local VAG due it being a fine thread.
How much extra would it cost to have new nuts supplied with new shocks? What a pain.
