Which engine do you have for starters ? I'm sure someone will be able to help once we know that.

engine is 1.9 petrol watercooled
ive checked if the red/yellow wire is live (its not) and i think it should go to the temp sender on top of engine .the wires which conected to sender at the moment are live so i think the best thing to do is get a new temp sender and see if it works

If it's an early DG (big waterpipes across the rear of the engine) then the temp. sensor is near left-hand corner as you look from the back. the red/yellow wire should have a 6mm wide female spade terminal to slide over the circular pin on the sender.

On a late DG the sensors are on the thermostat housing, far left-hand corner as you look from the back. They are on a multi-plug from memory.
