Rounded brake hose union

Hi

Everything going so smoothly with the rear brake overhaul. The brake pipe was very brittle and snapped off though the union has now rounded at the joint where it meets the flexi hose.

I was using the correct 11mm cut away brake spanner, but I think pipe was very bad anyway.

Any suggustions to get it out?

Why not buy new flexy hose and as you have to buy a new solid pipe, get made with the new nut fitted, it'll save a lot of messing about with nut splitters ect.

Cut the brake pipe so you can use a good quality socket, 12 sided best. If you could hammer on a smaller size socket(10mm) this will grip the union and then should undo. Use plenty of penetrating oil and given the union a few blows with a punch and hammer. This has always worked for me. Good luck.

6 sided sockets work best.. even on very rounded stuff.. as said cut the flexi hose and fit a new one.. they are cheap... and what price your/your famiies safety...

I have used a set of IRWIN 5pc DAMAGED NUTS & BOLT REMOVERs in the past - they got a wheel nut off that was well past any spanner / socket capability!

You can find them on EEEEBEEEY of course

Oh and 6 sided sockets are highly recommended - especially for the 46mm axle nut!

Replace the flexy, it's not worth the screwing around. Maybe best to check the other side as well .... do it now before the test man tells you to and charges you for a retest or worse still you end up with no brakes.

Coat the pipes in coppaslip and also the ferrules (collars) of the flexys too, they'll last for years then.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah the union rounded in the bracket bit that attaches to the flexi pipe. I had thought about removing the other half flexi pipe and just renewing straight through with a flexi pipe.

Discard the bracket bit and cable tie it... think I used a one size smaller split-ring spanner in the end, right pain aren't they

I got it out tonight. My Dad lent me some sockets that he got of QVC, they kinda cut themselves into the head to make a hold.

It worked and got it out and the thread seems undamaged, so can replace the steel line.
