One of the proverbial 'old chestnuts' of camper choice.

Had a Autosleeper syncro hi-top and changed to a Westy pop-top last year and usually have the four of us on board when camping.

The Hi top was great for storage of stuff with the extra front overcab cupboard and upper bed space; there are also security advantages of a solid roof too. But it was a bugger to stay in in any hot weather, especially down round the med. And of course it loved a cross wind on the motorway.

I thought we would have problems with storage in the westy, but actually have not. We just spent two weeks in Corsica and managed to take all the stuff we needed and did not miss the stuff we might have taken if we had more space. Generally you will pack in as much as your van can take and get selective about what you actually need.

I even put the roof rack on the westy but could have managed without it.
The higher cotton roof of a pop makes for a far better environment in the heat, but conversely will be colder at dubfreeze and will be tested by any 'horizontal' rain it has to fend off. And of course the cross winds dont trouble it anything like the high top when driving.

High tops have trouble getting under things; pop tops less so. Pop tops look more attractive; but thats a matter of opinion !

Nothing else i can think of at the moment.

I have a Hi Top fitted by Timber Tech, I had the same heat problem but I got some ultra lightweight thermal reflective material from Holland and installed it, it cost £40, I don't have any heat problems any more, make sure you get a vent with a mozzy screen.

Random note - The roof with 15" tyres will keep the height under 2.9m which will get you on the fast ferries.
If it was meant to go fast it wouldn't be shaped like a brick!

That reminds me;

for some reason vehicles over 2.2 metres high seem to have to pay more on French autoroutes. I was over 2.2 meteres with roof rack on.

as an aside :

heading for paris; I entered first peage to collect ticket but could not see how to get one out of the machine; no ticket issued, no button to push.

After a couple of minutes stroking my chin i noticed the ticket hanging out of a slot at lorry cab height. transpires that if you enter a lorry lane there is a sensor that looks at your height; if your over 2.2 meters it is assumed your a lorry and spits a ticket out above the height of your van !

Made me laugh, caused quite a queue. but then at the next peage i got pulled by the gendarmes, weighed and measured and fined 11 euros for not having some papers on me. you need Licence, insurance and proof of ownership it seemed from what i could make out of his French.

Oh dear..
Yep you need to have all your original papers by law. in France...

Its anything over 2m thats class 2 , I generally sneak through with the Doka syncro and they always knock it down to class 1 even if I have the canopy on the back which is over 2m...

Regards the high top pop top... do you use it off road? will you use it off road? I would go for the pop top for that reason .. but Syncronutz has a hitop.. but then ther are not many trees about in the morrocan deserts etc..
