carb problems i think

Post by markeymagicbus »

hi all

i was on my way to my mot and my t25 lost all power , still ticks over a bit lumpy tho , feels like its running out of fuel but the fuel filter shows that thers loads getting through

i have taken the jets out the top of the carb and blown them thro also i checked the diaphram on the front of the carb there was also plenty of fuel in the carb

any other ideas :?

I know exactly what it is, its MOT nerves!!

My Aircooled (2L CU) did just this on Sunday, just 600mtrs up the road, on the way to the MOT station for Monday!!

Seemed to run really well, then at a really busy junction lost power, back fired, ticked over, just not enough to move (except backwards).

RAC man came out & checked Plugs, Leads, Distributer, did a compression check, disconnected some wires & said he believes the right side of the engine is not getting enough or any fuel.

Limped home with just enough power to reverse into the carport.

Sorry I couldn't be of any help, but if anyone has any ideas, I too would be interested

shaz n daz , rh carb dosent get any juice on idle its all sorted by lh carb.
try un plugging the wires from the digital idle stabilisation valve (small oblong box on lhs engine bay with two wires coming out) and join them together. this sounds like a faulty dis unit to me.

Ah, now that makes sense, as you say it idles fine, but doesn't offer enough power to move any distance.

Thanks for your suggestion, I will give it go when we get back from our hols & let you know.

This dis unit you talk of, is that the distributer?

The idle stabiliser is between the distributor and the ignition electronics - to see if this is the problem just unplug the two round plugs from each side of it and plug them into each other. Also on a weber carb they usually have an internal fuel filter - remove the very large brass nut near the fuel inlet for access, I had one on another vehicle that got blocked just due to varnish from stale pertrol - it even looked cleen but held up to the light there were hardly any holes. End result was it would idle fine but tended to cut out on opening the throttle. Webers also seem prone to tiny bits of grit blocking internal passages - blowing the whole thing through with an airline is the only reasonably sure way, also worth checking that the inlet valve is not stuck or partly blocked.
Why does the not quite finished job before last always conspire with the not quite started job after next to make what you should be doing now harder?

if its a water cooled t25 the carb you have has 4 jets which you can see from the top if you tae the air cleaner top off. the one on the far left is the idle jet which has a tiny hole. we had problems with ours blocking on numerous occasions. the smallest bit of crud will cause you a problem.

the upshot of ours was the oil breather tower was letting in bits of crap and causing the problem, cleaned it out and all was fine.thanks to tonybus' advice!!
