Missing tinware?

Missing tinware?
I suspect I might be missing some tinware after looking at the exploded diagram on the wiki link recently. Should I be able to see the underside of the cylinders/push rod tubes etc from underneath the van (It's a CU)???

Hmmm as I thought Jen
If anybody has a pic of how theirs looks that they could post that would be greatly apprieciated.
Now for the question which I know the answer to as it's the same for all tinware related questions..........how critical is it??? Is it likely that I will end up damaging the engine by not having it???

You're more likely to damage your push rod tubes - they'll have dents and dings in them from stones flying up etc, and if they get dented enough to hinder the push rods movement, or actually hole and leak oil, then you'll have an issue....
The piece of tinware is rectangular(ish) with a step part way along it - no photo's and no CU van here I'm afraid, so I can't help you further....

Yes constant running without the lower tinware will lead to overheating of the heads and valve seat recession, the temperature of the head will rise to such an extent that the alloy will reach its elastic state and the hardened seat for the valves will start to work their way back through the head in extreme cases, and yes I have rebuilt 5 engines for customers who ran their motors without the bottom tins and this is what happens, I have some photos somewhere if this doesn't wake you up enough.
The tinware works like a shroud around the cylinders, cold air is blown from the fan at the front around the pots and head sides to cool and is defleted directly out of the back, if the bottom tin is missing the heat is blown directly downwards and is reflected back into the engine.
Don't be too scared it takes a lot to go this far such as a long journey, short hops will not warm it up sufficiently to cause damage but do either get them or make them either way they need to be done.

Ok I think I can assume that I really should replace these parts as a matter of urgency. Do they just bolt to the cylinders/heads or are there related brackets etc that go with them???
The main question I suppose is does anybody know where I might start to look for these parts???

Tin bottoms
They bolt onto the sump and heat exchangers - with 4 ordinary tinware machine screws. I'm in the process of refurbing my engine, including the tinware so could take pics if you still need that. Start phoning the breakers and hoping someone has some!

Breakers is where I hit a bit of a stumbling block, this is the first Aircooled I have owned so I haven't built up a list of handy names and numbers yet. If anybody has any details for decent Aircooled breakers that would also be a great help.
Also any Aircooled specialists in the cambridge area would be very habdy to know about.

I definately don't have that piece of tinware on either side. Looks like I'm going to have to scour the net and key my eye on ebay. Shame it's not the show season as I'm sure it would be easier to find some in an autojumble.
