I completely forgot to check the oil (doh)

I believe theres a leak but i pretty much totally ran out and came to a halt on the M4, the oil light only briefly came on too!!

I filled it up and then drove it a good 150 miles after but have i done any long term damage??

what do you mean, came to a halt. Broke down halt of just decided to stop and check halt?.

I lost all my oil after a pipe broke. I refilled it and its all ok. I guess so long as it goes, its ok. Simple logic but works for me !!!
well ive never seen one like that before !!

It was a kind of brokedown!

It slowed right down and struggled, i pulled onto the hard shoulder and when i tried to start it it made some very funny noises.

I had driven it the day before too...did about 150 miles with obviously not enough oil in it so worried that it may have caused some damage that i will come to find out about later..or if it was damaged, would i have known this straight away..like i said, i then put oil in and made it home so have done another 150 miles since, haven't noticed any problems???

First off. Give us a clue as to your engine.
Running out of oil is pretty terminal, but if the lack of oil had caused you to stop on the motorway I would have thought the next 150 miles would have been noisy and slow.

How much oil did youi top it up with?

I put in 2 litres of 10/40

it drove fine on the way home, no unusual noise or anything and wasn't struggling, did pretty much 70mph all the way back..

Do you think i've got lucky this time or might there be something that will take a while to show up?

I would say lucky... :D

I ran out of oil on my motorbike years ago it stopped and seized but was fine after it had cooled down and had some fresh oil in.
