could be pinking if it`s hot and working hard, pinking is pre-ignition caused by the fuel/air mixture igniting prematurely because of a hot spot in the cylinder, this causes the noise, sometimes very loud. Check the ignition timing, this can be the cause of it, amongst other things. It is potentialy damaging.
Keep it real.

Ticking Sound When Struggling Uphill
After 2 weeks in the Isle of Wight and hitting the hills hard, it is now sounding more like a horses hoof and i believe it may be a cv joint?
The sound also disappears when the clutch is pressed down.
Any takers?

ONE AT A TIME...grab the drive shaft and pull it back and too...this moves the grease about, drive it and if its gone then youve not only sussed the problem but located the side, if not try the other side.
some times you can just re pack these with grease, the outers tend to go first

It could be any number of things...
but a knocking driveshaft will do it under load no mater if its on the flat..
More likely is an engine problem.. the 1600 CT engine was useless when new so it wont have improved in 24 years!!!!
If it is pinking then it WILL damage the engine...
It may already be a problem, ie cracked head etc... these engines are very stressed in the T25... they only put out 50bhp (when new)
You really need to fnd someone that knows about these engines.. as they are a bit special..
Best option is to bank on doing a swap for a 2L Aircooled (and pref gearbox too) from a T25... easy swap...

Thanks, i am looking for a new engine and gearbox at the moment, will driveshafts normally come with this?
To be honest the sound has completely disappeared now we are back home from the isle of wight, the drive up the m3 might have done it some good?
I took it to Slough this morning and have not heard a thing.
Why could this very distinctive sound just dissappear?

check the cv joint studs as it sounds to me as if they may be loose.allen key or hex key depending on whats in there or possibly a mixture of both, check both inner and outer joints, if they work loose the drive shaft will obviously drop and you will lose all drive.your likely to have to drill an end or 2 (stud)out of the hub and retap the thread if they snap....
