Engine Question

Post by willy100 »

I have a 1984 T25 1.9 petrol. Engine ticks over fine when warmed up, but when the accelerator is pressed (even gently) the engine splutters and nearly dies. Once revs are increased it's fine, it's just that point of initial acceleration. Any ideas what I need to check and adjust? I'm a novice when it comes to mechaincs!

Many thanks for your help.

Mark

Yes fine on a run. I've only had the van a week, so I'm still learning about it. I'll take a look at the air filter. Thanks.

Classic vac advance unit on the distributor failed symptoms..

Get yourself a manual..

to test the vac advance unit.. suck on the hose that comes off the side of it.. if you can keep sucking its bust, if it holds vacuum then its ok.. So then the timing needs checking and all the vac hoses on the carb and to distributor need checking..
Could also be the accelerator pump diaphragm has split.. but this usually means petrol leaks out of the carb!!!

Just had the air filter apart. It looks new. I ran the engine with the filter out and it still has the same symptoms...

Probably accellerator pump on carb. Take air filter intake off top of carb and open accellerator linkage, looking down inside carb. There should be a squirt of fuel coming from a jet at top of carb, sometimes you can hear it as it squirts out. Should last for about a second or second and a half with throttle wide open (engine should be switched off for this, by the way!). If nothing comes out, your accellerator pump diaphram may have a hole in it or perished. Could also be the linkage to the pump, check all mechanical connections around the pump are sound and in place.

Hope this helps!

try cleaning the fuel system by using redex fuel aditive in the fuel tank. it does work, if the system is dirty as i have proved. if it does not improve after the first tank full through it then it could be electrical.take my word for it its good stuff.use as directed and use full bottle to thoroughly clean the system.

I agree with toomanytoys about the vac advance not working. Its also worth checking all the vac pipes especially the little pieces of braided rubber pipe that vw used as connectors. You will usually find a few of these are perished on a vehicle of this age and causing air leaks. I would usually get hold of a couple of feet of replacement pipe and replace the whole lot. This usually makes the engine tickover and run much better.
