Petrol Tank Breather Pipe

Post by syncrosimon »

I have had for some time a slight fuel pong which comes from the petrol filler / rear air intake grill area. On taking the plastic shroud off which fits around the filler neck I have found the end of the tank breather pipe. It just terminates under the plastic shroud with an open end. Is this how it should be? In the Bentley manual it shows the pipe ending in this fashion aswell. I am going to replace all the fuel lines, and have got a 5m roll from VW with a bag of clips which should sort any other problems. But this breather seems to be wrong. Has anybody else seen how this pipe terminates, and if so could you let me know so that I can sort it.
Cheers.

Mine smells most of the time.
The hotter the weather, the more it smells.
I'm pretty sure the tanks on our buses just "vent to air" unlike more modern vehicles which vent to the engine I think.

Re: Petrol Smell

For petrol smells on your Syncro take a good look the following;

1. The metal part Petrol filler pipe. (prone to rusting out.)

2. The Fuel filter (up under the LH rear wing). If it has been on for a long time electrolytic action between clamp & aluminium filter cause it to leak. (same can happen on the fuel pump)

Thanks guys, all seems to be in order and no rust on the filler neck, it's just what happens on the end of the breather pipe. I have got two pipes that are cable tied to the main filler tube, one is slightly larger than the other and is jubilee clipped back onto the filler neck, the other small one just finishes next to it, it is not plugged into anything, just hanging loose as if it has become un plugged. Is this what is supposed to happen to it?? I was woundering if this is where the petrol smell is coming from. There isnt anything for this loose pipe to plug into.
