help sump plug spinning

try a big pair of wire cutters behind the bolt, squeeze the cutters as you un-screw bolt.

the engine cases are split vertically and the sump plug thread is in one half of the pair, so you cant swap the sump for a good one if the thread is knackd, like you can with an air-cooled eng.
try gripping the bolt tightly with mole grips/self grip wrench and applying downward force as well as anti-clockwise [undo-ing] force and it may come out, then you'll need to rethread the hole bigger with a suitable thread cutting taper tap, and get an M16 x 1.5 renault sump plug, or helicoil insert it and re-use std. sump plug. [M14 X 1.5 MM Pitch, if i remember right.]

Morning, does anyone know which particular Renault's are fitted with this sump plug?

Forget that request! I've got a Renault sump bolt this morning from the local dealer for the sum of £1.10.

Next problem though is getting a tap to make it fit, the usual size for a M16 tap is 2mm pitch, which all the Engineering/Tool shops stock, but finding a 16 x 1.5 one had proved to be impossible today, so my bus is still unusable

Does anyone within a reasonable drive of Yorkshire have one that I could borrow? I'll ensure that it is returned safely!

not much help if you're in a rush to fix it, but worth looking on E-bay for the tap, might be expensive from an engineering supplies place, specially as you'll prob never use it again!
haven't got one at work, i used an imperial U.N.F. tap for mine.

Never done this and have no expertise but could you remove the old sump plug by drilling out and then......
1. get an old sump from a scrappy (anything would do as long as the sump plug looked in good nick)
2. cut out a section from the scrappy's sump about 4-6 inch square with the sump plug in the middle to use as a patch plate.
3. line up the two sump plug holes and weld the patch plate onto the bottom of your existing sump?
I could be talking complete carp of course? it is just an idea. Any got an opinion if this would work?

Remember the sump is ally, so not really a sensible option unless you have access to TIG. Much better and neater to tap out to a larger size, or helicoil. But as a last resort your idea can be an option.

just to let every one know i got mine out at last drilled a hole in the centre then screwed a screw in pulled down on that and covered my self in oil

replaced with a renaut sump plug ,

just need to figure out why its still rattly now ive changed the oil

Glad it's out mate,
could be a faulty hydraulic valve lifter causing the rattle, is it worse just after starting then dies down a bit?
if it is, they're about 9.50 ea. + vat. from GSF, [75 quid plus vat for 8 i paid when i rebuilt mine] if its just one at fault and you can find out which one, might be a cheaper fix

its defo only on one side and does die down a bit .

i'm going to take it for a bit more of a longer ride see if that settles it down as i dont know how long this engine has been sat about

I'm a firm believer in getting ya mechanicals sorted, and reliable before spending on fun stuff!
how cool do you look parked on the hard shoulder waiting for recovery with fancy wheels and low susp, when a daft mech. fault has stopped you in your tracks?

Finally sorted the blighter, used a M16 x 2mm pitch tap set, and fabricated my own sump-plug, all sweet now!

Van now sorted, exhaust welded up and off to the MOT centre with my fingers (and everything else) well and truly crossed!
